Unilever: Investment and Sustainable Development in China

Ever since entering the Chinese market, Unilever, the world's largest consumer goods company, has been pursuing sustainable development. SEPA has been counseling Unilever on its sustainable development strategy since 2006. Equally, over the past decade, SEPA has assisted the brand in designing, developing and delivering a wide range of campaigns which aim to enhance its public, business and media relations.

Over the years, SEPA has witnessed Unilever’s rapid growth in China. SEPA’s role in assisting Unilever with business investment and development in China is evident in the relocation of Unilever’s centre of production to Hefei—a region with cost advantages. Equally, SEPA’s effort is shown in the opening ceremony of Unilever’s Tianjin Production Base, the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Unilever’s Hefei Industrial Park and the launching of Unilever’s Sichuan production base, which is one of the world’s most advanced, environment-friendly factories. Through these events, Chinese consumers have started to gain a deeper understanding of Unilever’s values and its products.

In 2010, Unilever released its sustainable action strategy. Based on this strategy, SEPA has helped Unilever compose a social responsibility program and execute a large variety of campaigns. Such campaigns include educational programs which aim to help children from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds, “Flying Dreams” and “Countryside Kindergartens”.

Through these campaigns, the SEPA team has spread the values adored by Unilever to the wider public. The positive repercussions created by these programs in society help establish Unilever as a socially responsible enterprise, of which the key objective is sustainable development, thus appealing to Chinese consumers.
